Be Holy for He is Holy

These words were written to the Israelites, the people of God, and here in the verse Peter is calling those who follow Jesus to be holy as well. Ano ba ang ibig sabihin ng maging Holy? Being holy can be defined as “exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness.” Being holy means walking in perfect righteousness because God is perfectly righteous.

Why does God call us to be holy? It’s the same reason as when God set apart the people of Israel in the early part of the Bible narrative. Hindi ba binigyan ng napakadaming rules and rituals ang mga Israelites? Para saan? These were given to them to set them apart, to show the world what it means to be God’s people. God set these people apart, and then allowed them to experience countless victories in His name.

This is why we should also be Holy. To show the world that we are set apart and we are servants of God. Kung ang buhay natin kamukha lang ng kung paano mabuhay ang mga tao sa mundo, paano sila maniniwala na sinusundan natin ang Diyos? Sabi ng ni Albert Einstein, “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means.” How can God use us for His glory when the people around us don’t even recognise that we follow him?

But if we set ourselves apart, stay away from sin and the ways of the world. We are showing the people around us that we don’t belong to the same kingdom as they do. That we are following God, the ruler of everything. And when God gives us victories in our lives, siya din ang nakakakuha ng glory.

If you’re reading this at iniisip mo sa sarili mo kung gaano kahirap maging holy, let me tell you it’s impossible. It’s only through Jesus and the Holy Spirit that we can live victoriously over sin. That’s why we need to rely on Him day by day to be able to live a holy life like God calls us to. Hindi tayo iniwan ng Diyos para sikapin lang sa sarili natin ang mabuhay para sa Kaniya, binigyan niya tayo ng katulong at kakampi.

Commit today to live a holy life, set apart for God.
