I want you to think about someone you’ve worked with during the past year. Coworker, client; it doesn’t matter. As long as you’ve had to rely upon them for something.

Do you have the person in mind?

Now think about the first thing you would say if someone asked about working with them. Would it be a gleaming review? Throwing shade?

I’m willing to bet that the first thought reflects how you’ve felt when working with them. More about the kind of person they are and less about the work you’ve done together.

This is not uncommon. We commonly list a series of traits about others based on how we see them in our minds. The order giving a glimpse at the strongest feelings.

Why does this matter in terms of navigating the world? Because relationships and first impressions are the foundation of nearly everything.

There are three traits that will follow you throughout all aspects of your career and life in general. Fundamentally, they’re about understanding how people work. And if you can master the most important one, life will be significantly more enjoyable.

The first on our list and one of the most objective goals. Having a good handle on timeliness is paramount to professional success.

When you’re late, other peoples’ time is wasted. As you can imagine, they don’t take kindly to that happening.

When you deliver something late, the effects trickle down to their livelihood and reputation.

Yet when you are reliable, timely, and make others look good — you leave a much better impression. Granted, some of this is by way of the benefit to them. Remember, self-interest is not always a bad thing; it’s a normal human characteristic.

Bottom Line: Timeliness shows respect for others and a commitment to managing your own schedule. This makes you reliable and dependable.
