My First Crop of Bush Beans Inspire Me To Keep Going

So I can bring fresh produce to the community

I learned about bush beans from a young co-worker. She told me all they needed was a basic tomato cage to keep them from collapsing to the ground.

When she was growing up, her family kept a garden because they were dirt poor. During the summer, that garden fed them when the welfare check ran out.

The biggest surprise is how beautiful these beans are. Next year, I’m planting them in the front flower garden. They will provide an inviting pop of color in July.

Because I couldn’t find pattypan squash or wax beans at local farmer’s markets. If no one was selling them or growing them, that meant I had to learn how. And I did.

If I had a problem I could google it, ask a neighbor, or email the university extension service in my state.

Finding seeds was easier than I ever imagined. Grocery stores and hardware stores start stocking them in January for the upcoming spring. Even botanical gardens carry heirloom seeds in their gift shops. The packages all come with instructions and the internet offers information at every level of expertise.

I’ve tried growing other vegetables but started having problems. I learned that crops have to be rotated or they will get diseases when grown in the same soil. There was so much more I had to learn.

That’s when I discovered:

This 4-day plant sale rivals our Minnesota State Fair as a people magnet. This sale has grown so large, they moved it to the Grandstand on the fairgrounds.

It started as a school fundraiser but quickly grew beyond its mission. For a garden enthusiast, their 60-plus page catalog is easy to use and filled with useful information.
