Not A Pang Of Pain

When social media gauge your happiness vane

faces, happy faces are strewn all over fb
but only happy couples’ faces are what i see
i blinked, many a time, to search within
but not a pang, not a grain
nor a throb of pain lurks unseen…

It’s nice to be reminded — so what if it was Facebook that prompted the memory? — that 12 years ago today, despite a lack of a significant other for the longest time (divorce was taking forever), social media posts had not made me feel incomplete.

A good number of social media users, then as now, perceive that the photos shared online by many, including friends but especially celebrities, reflect a reality.

Not a few are deceived. Happy faces, lavish dinners, travels to exotic lands, or well-sculpted figures — think Kim Kardashian and sisters — who could resist not being wowed by those?

But the wow factor is mostly lost on me. Or should I admit that I do not gauge my joy and fulfillment against what social media present to me?

[Unless the post is about the achievements of authors, I could hardly be moved.]

So, no. My happiness vane is not influenced by happy faces and enviable life on social media.

And yes, it was enchanting to be assured by my own memories that no throb of pain lurks unseen within even during the days when I was really vulnerable.
