The Beauty of Truth

What is truth? The Webster Dictionary Definition says, “the state of being the case: fact” so in its simplest form, truth is something that can be proven as fact. What does the Bible say is truth? And how can we trust it?

Honestly, you can do a quick google search like I just did that will give you article upon article that lists the reasons and gives really solid explanations from both a scholarly and opinionated perspective. I could sit here and list all the reasons of why I know the Bible is real and true, but that won’t stand against a slight breeze.

Here is what I know about truth, based on what the Bible says.
The truth will set you free. John 8: 31–32 states “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

I want to give you a quick summary of John 8 as a whole just so you can grasp what was going down in the temple between the Jews and Jesus. After the Jews, who believed what Jesus had to say, left the temple, Jesus turned to talk to the remaining Jews. These are the ones who did not believe that what Jesus said was true and it gets pretty heated. Instead of listening to what He said, they told Jesus He had a demon in Him. He was having a back and forth argument with these Jews trying to get them to believe that He was the Son of Man, incapable of sin, carrying freedom in His words. Obviously, some of the Jews believed him which we can find in John 8:31–32, but as we read on, we see that there was another group of Jews that refused to believe what Jesus had to say was true. In the end of this chapter, Jesus ends up fleeing the temple because stones were being thrown at Him.

I really enjoy this story. It really proves that the Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12) because it is so relevant and relatable to the state of our current world, especially in terms of sharing the gospel. How many times have you tried to tell people of the good news of Jesus only to be called crazy, shunned, or called a liar? You might not have gotten stones thrown at you, but I’m sure that rejection felt pretty uncomfortable.

I think there are so many ways to break down this passage, but what I want to point out from my personal takeaways is that Jesus was so adamant about getting these Jews to believe Him because He knew they were slaves to their sin, headed to a painful and empty death. “Jesus answered them saying, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So, if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:34–36 But, because He loves us to the point of death on the cross, He wants us to understand the cost and weight of our sin so we can walk fully into the freedom he so merciful and gracefully gives. What are your thoughts on this passage? How do you break this down? I want to hear your own thoughts.

So, the truth will set you free, but before there is freedom, there is conviction. I’ll be vulnerable with you guys for a second, I was once reading a devotional that brought so much conviction, I closed the book and didn’t open it again for two weeks. But, that conviction weighed on me every moment of the day until I opened it up again. Conviction is really difficult, it feels like a heavy weight on your chest until you come to terms with it. Conviction is the Holy Spirit working in us so we can realize the wickedness of our sin, our own humanity. Conviction is the beginning of putting our flesh in the grave. It is the act of becoming aware, which is the first actual step to freedom. And freedom comes from knowing truth. But don’t take my word for it, 2 Corinthians 7:9–10 states “As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” See, it’s right there, our convictions from hearing or reading the truth from the Word create in us a stirring to repent, to lay down our flesh and walk in the Spirit. Only real, raw, absolute truth has the power to do this.

Honestly, there are so many passages in the Bible that talk us through why His word is true and sound. Why the Word is relevant. I could probably write a novel dissecting all the passages but 1. I am not a theologian and 2. Reading the Bible is really fun. That being said, I want to challenge whoever is reading this to do your own research. Read books that break down the Word, listen to commentaries, pray through it. We have all the access to the resources we need to stand firmly in our faith. Don’t let them go to waste. But most importantly, find the truth intricately and intentionally written into The Word. The most sound and beautiful truths lie in each page.
