The Irony of James Comey

When the former FBI Director found himself ousted from his position through the impersonal medium of a television screen, many of us watching along with Comey could empathize.

So, let’s rewind back to the election where this whole debacle began.

During the middle of the election season, a tall and imposing figure whose words did not appear to match with the strength of his rhetoric stood up and broke regular protocol.

That previously low-profile man was James Comey, whose notorious decision to hold a press conference amid FBI investigations on Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of confidential information through the use of her family’s private email server captured public and organized scrutiny alike.

His press conference on the matter catapulted him from obscurity into the national spotlight, entangled with Trump’s perpetually controversial personality and unconventional decision-making.

No matter how much the Clintons’ attempted to downplay the incident and no matter how well they tried to execute on the usual strategy they employ against what their constituency views as the blustering populist — taking the high road, or “when they go low, we go high” — she could never shed the ignominy associated with her blunder.

Many are still reeling from the results even now, especially in light of all the dirt that’s been pulled out of the gutter on Trump, such as the audio and video recordings of the infamous Access Hollywood tapes.

Maybe virtue signaling is losing its power in politics — we’ll soon see how this applies to Comey as well.

In any event, as most recall, Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election seen months ago as something she’d easily be able to wrest from the other candidate.

She had everything lined up for her with respect the current feelings of voters who wanted to maintain the status quo and vouch for their own supposedly held values of equality by voting the first woman into office.

If you disagree, let’s not forget that embarrassing tweet where Hillary prematurely celebrates her presidential victory on Twitter with a picture of her younger self, tagging it with a description along the lines of “future president.”
