Women Need Fitness Too

Women’s Fitness in Golf

Over the past few years, there has been a rise in fitness relating to golf, especially for men. Fitness articles for men in magazines and fitness demonstrations are rising in the media using various platforms such as YouTube, The Golf Channel, Golf Digest, Golf Fitness Magazine, and GOLF magazine. PGA golfers and tournament players are increasing in their physical health and strength to improve their golf performance. Although there is much publicity for men’s fitness in golf, there is little for women. Women’s flexibility in golf is important in many aspects of the golf swing such as hip rotation to cause clubhead speed.

As a majority, women are more flexible than men but are not as strong. Men create clubhead speed, which increases ball distance, using a greater strength to increase speed at impact. Because women do not generally have as much strength as men, women use their flexibility to increase their turn in their backswing and swing through impact to generate speed.

In the article, Golf Exercises for Women by Jim Thomas, he explains the important of fitness for women in golf and lists multiple exercises to help with flexibility and fitness for golf. He states the most helpful exercises are those that work on your core strength such as yoga warrior pose, lunges, standing wood chop, planks, cobra pose, squats, and supine spinal twists. These exercises are not only helpful in golf, but also in daily health. Fitness in women’s golf is different than training with heavy weightlifting; therefore, specific daily exercise routines need to be personalized around women instead of generalized in media for both genders. Women need fitness too.
