Does CBD Help Your Immune System?

Natural supplements have a long-standing role in immune support. As word spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vitamin C and other well-known immune-boosting products sold out in stores across the country.

Studies show CBD to have powerful effects on the immune system, though it interacts differently than most natural supplements.

Here we look at the research and discover what science knows so far about CBD and immune health.

First, let’s take a quick look at the human immune system.

The immune system is an exceptional built-in network of cells, organs, and tissues that work together to destroy foreign cells or particles. Every minute of every day, life exposes us to diseases, infections, viruses, and bacteria that would kill us without this protection. Our white blood cells remember when we have fought something off and record what worked to fight it off faster next time

In addition to defending our bodies against toxic invaders, our immune system detects and eliminates cells that are not functioning normally. Once aware of a defective cell, the immune system initiates ‘cell death.’ When working properly, this prevents damaged cells from multiplying or forming tumors.

Since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized CBD, research into its medical properties has flourished. One discovery they continue to investigate is the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is a system of receptors that extends throughout the body from head to toe. The ECS helps to balance and harmonize both our physical and cognitive systems. Two important ECS receptors CB1 and CB2, influence the brain and immune systems.

CBDs many medical benefits stem from its interaction with the ECS system.

Antioxidants are essential because environmental factors like food, tobacco smoke, and radiation leave free radicals in our system. These free radicals break down healthy cells and contribute to cancer, heart disease, and other health problems. Antioxidants bind with these disease-causing particles and remove them from our system.

However, before running out to treat your common cold or respiratory infection with CBD oil, there are a few essential details to consider.

CBD is a powerful antioxidant for maintaining the long-term health and beauty of your skin. It also works as a targeted anti-bacterial agent. However, studies show that both CBD and THC reduce immune function, making it an excellent treatment for autoimmune diseases but not the ideal supplement to fight off the common cold.

This is an impressive list of immunosuppressive properties with remarkable medical benefits to treat autoimmune disease, but less desirable for the average healthy person looking for a quick immunity boost.

The CBD seemed to disrupt the biofilms that bacteria use to protect themselves from antibiotics. They did not develop resistance to the treatment even after 21 days of continuous CBD application.

When combined with the antibiotic bacitracin, CBD increased the effectiveness of the drug. This made bacitracin more effective in smaller doses. Since the biggest problem with antibiotics is bacterial resistance, CBDs helper quality could save lives.

CBD is effective against gram-positive bacteria but not gram-negative.

CBDs health benefits are stacking up, but more research is needed to understand the ECS system and how it interacts with CBD to balance and strengthen the systems of the body.

Multiple studies confirm CBD’s anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and immunosuppressive properties. Impressive results after fewer than three years of research. Undoubtedly, there is more to come.
